"Why stay polluted in the popculture?" is a thought-provoking question, asked by Josh Chambers, of the Sloppy Meateaters, in the song "Popculture." What he means by this is that one shouldn't get all caught up in what everyone else is doing, or what the media is doing; they should just be themselves. The world would be a very boring place if there wasn't any individuality, not to mention the fact that the music scene would suffer greatly. People should express themselves, be creative, and be individuals. What's the fun in being just like everyone else? Without individuality, the world would be a very bleak, boring place. Schools would simply become warehouses to hold the masses of Hollister-clad MTV-zombies, formerly known as teenagers. Everyone would just be a demographic, nothing more than a number on a chart for another faux-pas 'reality' TV show, or an album sale for another band that can't sing, play any instruments, or write their own songs. Art would cease to exist, and literature would digress to utter garbage. Without individuality, corporate America would take over: there would be nothing new, nothing different-just a life of monotony in a business suit. This bleak outlook could be combatted with individuality's biggest partner-in-crime: creativity. Creativity is one of the best ways to express individuality-it lets you be yourself, in whatever medium you choose. Writing, drawing, and webdesign are all great examples of this concept. A well done sketch, a beautifully tragic story, or a sheek layout for a website can channel your individuality. I personally do all the aforementioned things, as well as make and customize a portion of my own clothing, which I feel helps me express my creativity in a productive way. Several of my friends use music as their creative outlet, spreading their feelings and views with thoughtful lyrics and impressive guitar solos. Music is yet another thing that thrives from individuality. Trend bands may sell albums for a few months, but it's the individual, creative bands that stick around and make a lasting impression on the industry. For example, Kurt Cobain's influence still affects musicians today, even after his untimely death. The Cure's frontman Robert Smith gained a cult-like following with his untamed hair, bright red lipstick, and catchy yet sorrowful melodies. My Chemical Romance brought a certain theatrical quality back to music, and dominates the charts. Another fine example is the Sloppy Meateaters, with Josh Chambers spreading his message of "Seek truth, not acceptance," from the band's tour van, giving hugs to all that will accept them. In conclusion, individuality is one of the most important concepts there is. The world would be a dull place without it, and art of all mediums would suffer. Creativity and individuality are key if you want to be yourself, instead of a mindless demographic. Real music thrives on individuality, just like real people.
